The other thread looks good. Also, if you think performing a demo will open the gate to the decision maker. You should say beforehand, "At the end of this demo, if you like the product and the capabilities, I would like to speak with your manager. Does that sound good to you?"

It's not worth the time. Be it in demos, prospecting, cold calling, email campaigns--sales professionals should target decision makers. For me personally, I think contacting a person who is not the ultimate decision maker is somewhat a waste of time. Unless you use it as a way to connect with the decision maker that you need.
